Music Philosophy
As a musician, Grace’s music philosophy is always changing, growing, and expanding while she continues her studies as a music education major. Grace feels that music education provides students with a creative outlet and allows them to be vulnerable with their peers around them. She believes that this vulnerability that students feel will allow them to create personal and deep connections through music that will last for a lifetime. Music should be studied throughout a person’s lifetime: from childhood until old age. It is a form of therapy that can be used to nurture, console, and express emotions which sometimes cannot be explained through words. Music education should move beyond only teaching Western-classical music and should reflect world music. The music that is taught in a classroom should showcase the student’s musical interests and allow them to engage more in the lesson. Finally, Grace’s goal as a teacher is to inspire and lead students to be open and share their emotions through music. Learning the music in a score is beneficial, but conveying emotion and telling a story through music are life skills that Grace hopes her students will take with them forever.
